Archives for category: Work outs

I have been doing crossfit for about 2 months now and can honestly say I love it.  What do I love so much about it? Well I am sure you have heard it all before but for me.  Its the group mentality as well as having the set time, place a workout ready to go.  I can not bail even if I want to.  I mean I can not show up but as long as I show up I know I am going to get a killer work out.

I also still do Bikram yoga once a week which I still think is amazing but its the exact same thing ever single time which is great, and always challenging but it sometimes gets boring mentally.

Since its been 2 months I can for sure see improvements in my numbers on the board as well as on the scale (well there is no scale but pants are looser so I count that as a scale victory unless all my pants decided to grow)  But I have been wanting to make goals I can accomplish in the box (crossfit’s gym)  So here goes nothing.

1) Box Jump (lets say 20″ but I have to check)

1)  DU

2) Squat Form

A few weeks ago I decided that I should run the same 5k that I ran last year the only thing is I had not been really running that much since I had been doing Bikram Yoga.  Nonetheless, a few Saturdays ago Vin and I got up at 6 am on a Saturday morning and heading downtown.  This year they expanded the race to include a 10k which a think double the participation, so it was a little crowed. Vin snapped some photos as I stretched and I told him that he should see me around the 45min mark.  That is what I have been running 3 miles at on my own a month ago so I thought that was a safe bet.

me running about .4 miles in.   I get very camera shy and I thought I was telling myself to look at the camera but obviously that is not the case.  The course is easy, its Florida, straight shot on A1A.  To my left is the ocean and to the right is beautiful houses so it is pretty easy to keep yourself moving.  The only negative is it is a run out, 1.5 miles and run back.  I like seeing all the fast people run  back but it gets a little boring on the way back.  I had my Garmin 305 on and I was not keep to close track of my mile marks just trying to keep moving and once I turned back and hit 2.5 I realized that I would beat my time from last year.

And it turned out by more then a minute.  Last years time was 36:51 and this years time 35:36.

Things lately have been all over the place and I have just been ignoring my blog.  My business has picked up a little and my wedding is almost a month away so I feel like that is what has been occupying my time.   There has been a lot going on.  I am going to start off on the work out side of things.    I pick up this amazing book called the New Rules of Weight Lifting for Women.

I saw it on Megann’s amazing blog Meals and Miles, which I highly recommend readying.  She is a great blogger and always has interesting, inspirational and funny things to talk about.  So she picked this up because she is training for an Ironman because she is badass.  While I am not training for anything like that I have been looking to, I was going to say tone Lou Schuler the narrator of this book would not agree, so lets go with make my arms look good for my strapless wedding dress, which I am picking up in CT in a few weeks and flying back with me.  So anyway, I got the book from the library so I could see if I like it and very quickly I really started to enjoy it.  Stage 1 takes 6 weeks if you do it 3 times a week and I was banging it out and upping my weight and feeling great.  I finished stage 1 and was starting stage 2.  My loving fiance decided he wanted to join in, we are ignoring the title of the book now.  Last Wednesday we got up at 6:30am and went to the gym to start Stage 2.  We did one move and then we moved on to the step up, which was part of stage 1.  A step up is basically exactly what it sounds like.  You hold some weights and you step up on to something higher and step down.  As we were doing them I called out “last one” and as I placed  my right foot on the ground I heard a crunch and fell over.  Vin immediately threw down his weights and I fell into tears not as much from the pain but just the fear of what this could be, broken ankle, crutches at the wedding, little to no working out.  We decided that the best thing was for him to get the car and then we could decide if I would need to go to see of professional from there.  In the end we decided that I would just not move from the couch, and according to Vin no going to the bathroom, for one whole day and see how I feel from there.  Thankfully after taking 2 days really easy I am back to normal with a little pain in my foot.

Unfortunately,  because of this I did not have a very healthy week.  I am looking to re commit myself to focusing on the greater goal and not so much immediate gratification, such as beer, friend chicken and donuts, so it goes.  I walked and slowly jogged 2.5 miles this morning and will be doing a relaxing flow class today.

I started writing this yesterday and by that I mean I opened up word press for the first time in almost a month and wrote the word focus as a title and then continued to do every other thing minus right a blog post.  Yesterday I went for a job interview and it got me to thinking.  I will hear back about the job on thursday.  When I hear back I will relate the news but if I think about the interview I start to nit pick everything. So anyway, not thinking about it.  Monday I started a living social deal I bought for one month of unlimited yoga at Yoga Fox.  So far I have done 5 classes in 4 days and am really enjoying “traditional” yoga.  Because of the interview I did not get to do yoga yesterday so today I took two classes a general flow class which was an hour and a half and a lunch power hour class.  There was a 30 minute break so I check to make sure I had no important email, none, and had a power bar.  After that I went and ordered our wedding bands!  I am so excited they will be here in 2-3 weeks.

After all that I got home and it was already 2:00pm and I was pretty hungry.  So I made a green monster and had some pretzels, peanuts and raisins on the side.

and my first smoothie in a bowl!  i liked it.  the green monster included, spinach, soy vanilla protein powder, water, ice, banana and mango.  it was very good.

I had a portrait lens which is great for photographing people but really hard for still lives since I had to be on the other side of the kitchen to get anything in focus but I was to hungry to waste time chanting lenses so that is that.

So what was I saying about focus?  I find that I start something get distracted and then move on to something else and while sometimes that is necessary, like when firefox will not stop freezing other times it leads me to meander through my days.  I love schedules but it is hard to schedule a day when a big part of my day is answering the phone and replying to emails.

I am not sure how i thought this week was going to go but no workouts have gotten done.  We did do a little biking on sunday but not much more then 4 miles because it was just to get breakfast and come back.  But my goal was to make a schedule not to stick to it so I am ok with it.  I mean sticking with it is the point of the schedule but I knew this week would be tough.

My friend Jessica, sent me this interesting article about goals and I thought it was pretty helpful and kinda what I am trying to do.  I think I could be more specific like “snack smarter” but I do not want to say have a banana everyday because I do not believe you should be held to those type of restrictions especially when it comes to food.   I do like number 5 “focus on being better, rather then being good” I feel this is where “having less down days” falls.  I know I will always have down days no matter what but trying to make them less often or maybe not whole days, just bad half days or bad hours.

I am going to go clean the kitchen and make a nice healthy lunch now.  Have a great Wednesday!

On monday I set out to do a smooth 3 miles.  I currently do not have any training plan except to run.  It was the afternoon and i find I am usually faster then but usually I do not have the time to run in the afternoon.  So I am running and I run 1.5 and then turn around.  This is the usual route I run and its on the side walk of a pretty busy road.  I usually jog past one or two people but there is not a ton of foot traffic.  I was listening to the Wicked soundtrack, i love musicals, but as the soundtrack goes on it kinda gets slower so I wanted something to pump me up for the last .3 miles.  I went on my ipod trying to find “Can’t Stop Believing” song by the Glee cast, I totally am just putting it all out there on this one, I swear I sometimes listen to good music, but instead of selecting that song I selected “Can’t Stop” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers which was actually a really great song to end on. I am almost done and I see this lady walking, then start running towards me and then she sticks out her hand for a high five as I pass and says something like “way to go”.  First, I do not know this lady maybe we have passed before but I am 95% sure she was not in “running gear”, but in my flight of endorphins I high fived her and continued on my way.  So yeah that was interesting.  Any one else have people randomly high five you?  Here are my times, I need to set my garmin so it does not add it up like that but that would require time, one day.

lap 1: 13:11
lap 2: 27:30
lap 3: 39:53

sweaty but happy

when i started to run during the day i started to notice this.  i thought it was a wicked sock tan but its more like dirt.  it reminds me of when i was a kid and i thought i would get tan at camp but then you would shower and it would go away.

i also need to get a darker colored hat.  so over humid florida and its only april.  its going to be a long summer.  well thats all the weird reveling stuff i got for now.  hope everyone has a fun and relaxing weekend!

On friday I had to drop Vin off at work which meant I was in the car already and could drive some where to run.  I choose to run on AIA which is the road that runs parallel to the ocean.  While the part I ran you can not see the ocean it has become on of my favorite places to run.  First off, the huge multi million dollar house on either side, the inter coastal which you can see sometimes and the super cute dogs.   I did not bring my phone so no pics from the run but here are my stats

mile 1: 11:52
mile 2: 24:40
mile 3: 38:40
mile 4: 51:30
mile 5: 1:04:04
mile 6: 1:16

This is one of my best times and I attribute that to all the running Vin and I have been doing as well as having only enough change for an hour and 20 min in the meter.  Nothing like the fear of a parking ticket to get your but moving.
